”…C’est parti!
Exactly two years after returning from the US, I’m relocating to Paris to join imec.AI-labs led by Karl Tuyls, Ludovic Denoyer, Elke Giets and Ben Stoffelen.
I’ll be diving into multi-agentic AI and getting hands-on with early prototype work that helps move our research ideas toward real‑world impact.
Let’s go 🚀…”

”…With my PhD thesis submitted and approaching its final stage, I’m happy to share that I have joined Ludovic Denoyer and Karl Tuyls as part of the founding team of imec.AI-labs in Paris, where I’ll be working as a Researcher.
Looking forward to collaborating and growing as a team on cutting-edge AI research!…”
Extending the team
Today, we are onboarding new imec.AI-labs members in our Paris Office. By the end of the week, imec.AI-labs will be about 15 members spread in UK, Belgium, France and Luxembourg , and the Frontier AI Paris team as part of imec.AI-labs is now 10 members focused on high impact fundamental AI research.
Not a better way to start a new year :) – Happy new year !
First member of imec.AI-labs in Paris
We officially welcomed Dr. James Butterworth as our first dedicated Research Scientist to the newly established imec Frontier AI Research team in Paris.
James brings a strong background, holding a Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool focused on the intersection of Machine Learning and Evolutionary Algorithms, with expertise in both deep learning and multi-agent systems. His post-doctoral work at UCL proposed novel algorithms for interpretable machine learning applied to healthcare, alongside valuable experience in the startup world.
Together with Karl Tuyls and Ludovic Denoyer, our research core is now three ! We are committed to growing this team with diverse scientific profiles, believing that true breakthrough contributions come from mixing different experiences and approaches.

Creation of imec.AI-labs in Paris
imec.AI-labs is created in Paris, under the supervision of Ludovic Denoyer with the objective to develop fundamental AI research. It will focus on distributed intelligence systems, but also impact high societal-value domains like healthcare.
New AI Initiative at imec
The Leuven-based research center imec has appointed Karl Tuyls as CTO of AI and Fellow, making him a prominent member of the organization. This computer science professor spent many years at the Google subsidiary DeepMind and was, until recently, a Director of AI Research at Meta.
